Katha

Journalist : Tarunima Mago

Katha, a Non Profit Organization working with and in story and storytelling for 22 years now, has more than 300 published titles, including quality translations of fiction for adults and children; 21 Indian languages in the voices of over 600 writers and translators.

Katha’s mission is to enhance the joy of reading for children and adults, thereby helping every child realize his or her full potential. To combat social injustice and poverty through active story based learning, quality education and community action. Katha has a pan India presence with its active participation throughout Arunachal Pradesh, NCT Delhi, Haryana and Maharashtra.

Started in 1988 with a magazine for children from the undeserved communities, Katha’s work spans the literacy to literature continuum. By seamlessly connecting grassroots work in education and urban resurgence, Katha brings children living in poverty into reading and quality education. To date, through its many programmes, Katha has brought schooling to 162,500 children, trained 17,000 of them in IT, taught 90,000 women in income-generation and social activism skills, and brought the joy of reading to more than 6,000,000 children.

On the other end of the creative spectrum is Katha publishing programme that bolsters the reading initiative by producing books that create space for culturally distinctive literature and celebrate the glorious polyphonous multiplicity that is India. With every carefully chosen and published title, quality has been the single major idea that drives Katha.
