MEMINI

by Alam Bains

“MEMINI”, founded by Norwegian music producer and activist Deeyah, is an online site for remembering the victims of honour killings. The UN conservatively estimates that 5,000 women and girls are killed each year globally by members of their own family in the name of "honour".

Deeyah feels that the perpetrators of these honour motivated crimes want all signs of the lives of these young women to be completely wiped out. Memini wishes to ensure that the stories of victims of honor killings are told, thus defying the intent of those who wanted to erase them. This documentation of stories has a deeper purpose – to bring to light the many women and girls who are victims of this brutality in order to tell the world – it is happening and it has to stop.

MEMINI is an ongoing project and continues to add content as it is gathered. It is an entirely volunteer driven initiative where wonderful individuals are helping by donating their time to help support this online place of remembrance.

iXiGO, launched in 2007, is a global travel search engine. It searches more than 100 travel sites to find the best flight, hotel deals. Its mission is to aggregate travel information and make it searchable and useful with passion of bringing a technology that brings speed, usability and transparency to the travel world. It is among the NASSCOM 100 IT Innovators 2007.

iXiGO is an infomediary, not an intermediary. That means it’s NOT an online travel agency. It just let you search directly across multiple airlines, hotels, buses, trains and online travel agencies in real-time so that you don't need to search a zillion travel websites. It thus aims to make your travel search easier for you, the same way Google does for information on websites.

iXiGO is a search of the traveler, by the traveler and for the traveler. Unlike travel agencies, there are no biases or commercially-motivated deals within their results. They provide objective, comprehensive and transparent information to assist us in making informed traveling. iXiGO's utility and ease of use have made it a top travel search engine almost entirely through word of mouth from satisfied users.

Israel Herald

Israel Herald was established in September 2002 to provide up-to-the minute local news, together with national and international headlines as part of a global network pooling resources to deliver a quality service to member sites. Each online publication has been modeled on a newspaper format for familiar readability by users.

The locations forming part of the network were selected on the basis of demand for news for that location. Israel Herald, effectively an online newspaper, provides coverage of the city, the metro and regional area.

International news, business and finance stories are common across the network of sites, and are drawn from a number of sources including wire services. Israel Herald and the other sites are administered by Midwest Radio Network from offices in Sydney, Australia.

endPoverty.org

with inputs: Govind T

endPoverty.org helps enable the very poor of the world to lift themselves, their families and their communities out of poverty. It provides small loans, business training and community development programs through a network of locally-led organizations in twelve countries to equip poor families to improve their lives.

After more than two decades of work across the developing world, endPoverty.org understands that poor people in every country have skills and initiative that they want to use to lift their families out of poverty. Instead of a handout in the form of aid, many thousands of poor clients have received a hand up through training and small business loans.

endPoverty.org programs do not discriminate on the basis of religious affiliation or impose any religious requirements on prospective or current clients. Also, each endPoverty project is designed to produce an indigenous, independent ministry, one that is expected to stand on its own financially within a few years.

Voice of Indian Women

With Inputs: Soubhik Chakrabarti

This website as the name suggests aims at bringing out the real voice of women of India. This is not just a question of security outside the house but also inside the house. Women are battered on a regular basis in the very confines of their houses. Every revolution needs a voice; this website is the voice of revolution. The collective voice of women will perhaps make a difference and make our world a better place.

The site basically draws on the position of women in the twenty first century. It seeks an insight at the way women are being treated in our society. It deals with the sexual double standards and seeks to bring the voice of women together. An active participation, debates and discussions related to current affairs will be helpful in order to take things to the next level.

The website blog, started by Trisha, also has articles written by her which showcases the various myths and actualities that exist around the world and how women are discriminated against.

Youth4Work

Correspondent:Soubhik Chakrabarti

Youth4work is one of the few organisations available online that are a real bonus to college students and youth in general. The youths are given freelancing opportunities by various companies and hone their talent in the different projects assigned to them.

Youth4work expects companies to tap the untapped potential of the youth while the youth can prove their abilities and strengths as well as gain valuable insights and experience. The companies directly interact with the students and there is a system of pre-qualifying where the students can win loads of money!

The companies benefit by having to spend less than on a regular employee while the student or youth gets hands’-on first class experience and if the work is good, he may even be considered for placement. All in all, it’s a great online platform for making new professional contacts, finding part-time work or doing a worthy internship which will help in one’s CV.
