Saalumarada Thimmakka : Environmentalist

Saalumarada Thimmakka is an Indian environmentalist from the state of Karnataka, noted for her work in planting and tending to 284 banyan trees along a four-kilometre stretch of highway. Her work has been honoured with the National Citizen's Award of India and many other national and international awards. A U.S. environmental organisation called Thimmakka's Resources for Environmental Education is named after her. 

She used her own meager resources for planting these trees along with her husband.  The couple used to carry four pails of water for a distance of four kilometres to water the saplings. They were also protected from grazing cattle by fencing them with thorny shrubs.

Thimmakka has also been involved in other social activity like constructing a tank to store rain water for the annual fair held in her village. She also has a dream of constructing a hospital in her village and a trust has been set up for this purpose.

Ehsaas

Ms. Shachi Singh, founder of Ehsaas, many years ago saw a poor boy in ragged clothes trying to sell her a bottle of mineral water. This was one of her first inspiration to change things. She wanted the children to study and enjoy their childhood rather than face inhumanity. From then, her efforts have catapulted the Lucknow railway station from child labor and police atrocities on the children. She opened a NGO called Ehsaas in 2002, and her Ehsaas team has ensured Charbagh railway station has become the first station in the country to be declared child labour free.

Ehsaas focuses on children who live on footpaths and railway stations with an intention to improve their quality of life and also help them lead a life free from police fear. It’s one of the objectives is to create consciousness among the people about the violation of rights of children. And its vision is to be instrumental in creating a society and systems that are child friendly and protective.

Ehsaas came into being with a group of individuals and organisations coming together, committed to make meaningful social change. The organization has representation of individuals from the government, corporate and social development sector. Ehsaas has a strong belief that community participation would bring the desirable change in our society.

The Media and Democracy Coalition is a collaboration of over two dozen local and national organizations committed to promoting open and equal access to a democratic media system that serves the public interest.

Their current priorities includes opening the media system to all perspectives and competing voices by promoting diversity of ownership and content, while stopping media consolidation and monopoly control of the public airwaves and bridging the digital divide by guaranteeing that Internet access is fast, affordable, and accessible to all, and promoting public efforts to create such networks.

Working together, they seek to amplify the voices of the public in shaping media and telecommunications policy. The Media and Democracy Coalition was founded in 2005 by the nation's leading public interest media reform and telecommunications advocates. Its role is to facilitate collaboration among diverse organizations; help build organizational capacity to increase the number of groups working to reform our media landscape; share information and resources; and create opportunities for joint mobilization on key media reform policies.

Rajpurohit Seva Sansthan

Rajpurohit Seva Sansthan is a non-profit, non-governmental and non- political voluntary social service organization established in the year 2000 with its head office at Udaipur. 

Main objective of the organization is to serve the animals that are left unattended, thirsty and hungry.  Second aim of the Sansthan is to bring about remarkable development in the life of poor and illiterate rural people with special attention to the tribal residing in and around unapproachable and hilly areas. More emphasis is given on their socio-economic development. Sansthan runs a “Gau Shala” in village Isali near Marwar to achieve its above mentioned aims. 

Also, Sansthan organizes various Blood Donation and Eye Donation camps. Sansthan has recently initiated a project name Intregrated Tribal Children Development Program which takes proper care of the children from very infant age. The child labours working in remote urban areas are brought to the child labour rehabilitation centre. They are provided education, health checkups, treatment, general care and nutritious food in this centre. They are also provided personality development training. The organization aims at establishing orphanages for the poor orphans.
